Connect Your ORCID iD to MedPublica: Building a Connected Research Identity

Official platform update

Medical professionals often contribute to several institutions, publications and research activities throughout their careers. Keeping those contributions connected to one professional identity can make it easier for others to recognise and explore their work.

At MedPublica, we want contributors to develop a public body of medical writing that remains connected to their identity.

To support this, MedPublica now allows contributors to connect their ORCID iD directly to their MedPublica profile.

This optional integration brings an established research identifier into the contributor experience, making it easier to connect a MedPublica author profile with an existing ORCID record.

What is an ORCID iD?

ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID.

It is a globally used system that provides individuals with a unique, persistent digital identifier for research, scholarship and related professional contributions.

An ORCID iD consists of 16 characters, typically displayed in four groups, and is associated with an individual ORCID record.

Unlike a name, which may be shared by several people or appear differently across publications, an ORCID iD is designed to remain associated with the same person throughout their career.

This is particularly useful for people who publish under different name formats, change institutions or contribute to work across multiple disciplines.

ORCID records are maintained through ORCID, an independent, non-profit organisation.

Creating an ORCID iD is free, and individuals can manage their own records and visibility preferences.

ORCID Connect is now available on MedPublica

MedPublica contributors can connect an existing ORCID iD through their profile workspace.

Rather than simply displaying an identifier entered as text, the connection process allows contributors to authenticate through ORCID.

Once the connection is completed, MedPublica can associate the authenticated ORCID iD with the contributor’s account.

The connected identifier is managed alongside the contributor’s existing professional profile information.

The feature is optional. Contributors can maintain their MedPublica profiles without connecting an ORCID account.

How to connect your ORCID iD to MedPublica

The connection process begins within your MedPublica contributor workspace.

Step 1 — Open your MedPublica profile

Sign in to your MedPublica account and navigate to your Profile Workspace.

This is where you manage your contributor identity, professional information, public profile settings and available profile connections.

Step 2 — Find the ORCID connection section

Locate the ORCID controls in your profile workspace.

If you already have an ORCID account, select Connect ORCID.

If you are new to ORCID, the workspace also provides an option to create and connect an ORCID iD.

Step 3 — Authenticate through ORCID

You will be directed to ORCID to sign in and authorise the connection.

After the authorisation process is completed successfully, you will return to MedPublica.

Your profile workspace will display the connection status and associated ORCID record.

Step 4 — Choose whether to display ORCID publicly

Connecting an ORCID account does not require you to display it publicly.

You can manage the visibility of your connected ORCID iD using the available profile controls.

When public display is enabled and the author profile is eligible for public visibility, readers can access the ORCID connection from the contributor’s public profile.

How ORCID appears on a MedPublica author profile

MedPublica author profiles are designed to connect published work with relevant information about the person behind it.

For contributors who have connected ORCID and chosen to display it, the public profile can include an ORCID link alongside other professional connections.

An authenticated ORCID connection is represented using ORCID’s recognisable identity symbol and a connection indicator.

Selecting the link takes the reader to the corresponding ORCID record.

This provides a convenient way for readers, colleagues and other researchers to move between a contributor’s MedPublica profile and their ORCID identity.

The visibility of this connection remains under the contributor’s control.

Why connect ORCID to your medical writing profile?

An ORCID iD can be useful at different stages of a medical or academic career.

A consistent identifier across institutions

Doctors, medical students and researchers may move between universities, training institutions, hospitals and other professional environments.

An ORCID iD provides a persistent identifier that can continue to be used across these transitions.

A stronger connection between identity and contributions

MedPublica displays medical writing under named authorship.

Adding an authenticated ORCID connection provides another way for readers to identify the contributor and navigate to their wider research identity.

This complements the professional information and published work associated with the MedPublica profile.

Useful for early-career contributors

Building a professional record does not have to begin after completing specialist training or entering a research institution.

Medical students, interns and early-career doctors who participate in scholarly or educational work may find ORCID useful as they develop their professional activities.

Establishing a consistent identifier early can make it easier to maintain continuity across future contributions.

Greater control over your professional presence

Contributors can decide whether to connect ORCID and whether the associated link should appear on their public MedPublica profile.

They can also manage their ORCID connection through the profile workspace.

This gives contributors flexibility in how they present their professional and research-related information publicly.

MedPublica profiles and ORCID: Connecting the work to its author

MedPublica already brings together named authorship, public author profiles, published medical writing and available citation tools.

ORCID connectivity extends this approach by allowing contributors to associate their MedPublica identity with a persistent identifier used across the wider research community.

A reader exploring a MedPublica Article can identify its author, follow the eligible author profile, examine their published contributions and, where the contributor has enabled it, visit their connected ORCID record.

These connections make it easier to explore the people and publications behind medical ideas.

Start connecting your professional identity

If you already have an ORCID iD, you can connect it to your MedPublica account through your Profile Workspace.

If you are beginning to develop a research or medical writing profile, you can also learn more about creating an ORCID record and connecting it to MedPublica.
